A Week in the Life of Atoms: Reading, Math & More

Students in Ms. Youker’s 4th grade class practice their reading fluency skills by enjoying independent reading time.

Tuesday, September 21st, 2021This past week was jam-packed for the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school Atoms!

Fourth grade students in Ms. Youker's class worked on their reading fluency and finding key words in text. For this task, students were asked to read independently, while Ms. Youker circled the room. If the students had any questions or needed assistance with a word or its meaning they would raise their hand.

In addition to Ms. Youker's class, Mrs. Rice was also working on developing the reading skills with the Atoms in a 1:1 setting. We can't forget about teachers Mr. Burns, Mrs. Natale and Ms. Martin who were busy teaching math lessons to their groups or class.

Keep up the great work Atoms, we are looking forward to seeing what this week will hold for you!

Atoms Learn the Art of Mindfulness in Gym Class

Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school students will have two types of physical education classes this year: Mindfulness techniques, and team building sports and activities.

Tuesday, September 14th, 2021Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary is excited to announce that the students will be having two types of physical education classes this year. The first class will focus on teaching fine motor skills and an introduction to various sports, and the second will be mindfulness which will include yoga, and various relaxation techniques such as meditation.

For those not familiar with mindfulness meditation, it is the art of sitting in silence and finding a breathing anchor point (like the belly, nose, or chest) and focusing on your breath? This practice, although in theory may seem very simple, it is in fact quite challenging at times! When one begins to meditate it is very common for the mind to wander, as the mind is always looking for something to do. When this happens, the goal of meditation is to acknowledge the thought, and then try and refocus on the breath. What this does is helps improve concentration skills and patience.

9/11 Remembrance

Science Academies of New York (SANY) honors and remembers those whose lives were tragically changed 20 years ago today, and thanks the first responders. United we stand!

Saturday, September 11th, 2021It’s hard to believe that 20 years ago to this day, our lives tragically changed. Many of us know where we were when we heard the news that day. Some of us heard it on the radio, or watched the news that morning. While others may have heard the news from a coworker or a family member or friend. A day in history that we will never forget.

Today, we mourn those who lost their lives, and grieve with those who lost friends and family. We would like to take this moment to thank all of our brave first responders, and those who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. United we stand.
