On Wednesday, May 23, 2018, #SASCCS introduced a new student in Ms. Eisenson and Ms. Diorio’s first-grade class. Lea the therapy dog from PAWS of CNY trots into school every month to help the students work on their reading. Lea is a great listener and each student reads aloud to Lear to help strengthen their fluency and confidence.
On Monday, May 21, 2018 #SASCCS first-graders visited The Wild Animal Park in Chittenango and got up close and personal with exotic animals. #SASAtoms fed goats, llamas, and giraffes. Students learned about the tigers and black bears from the zookeepers. Did you know, the black bear Ursus americanus is the smallest, yet most common, of the three bear species found in America (after the polar and grizzly). These lessons in wildlife diversity are just one way our #SASCAtoms learn about our global environment. Go Atoms!
On Thursday, May 17, 2018, #SASCAtoms brought their families to our first Scholastic Book Fair and a night filled with literacy. They participated in literacy activities associated with authors such as Dr. Suess, Eric Carle, and Leo Lionni. Did you know, reading aloud promotes language development and early literacy skills? #SASCCS encourages the entire family to be involved in their #SASCAtoms literacy success. Go Atoms!
Our #SASCCS First-graders are taking the literary world by storm. This winter, the first-graders in Ms. Eisenson's and Ms. Diorio's class worked very hard to write their own book. After writing about what they'd want to be when they grow up, the first-graders illustrated pictures to match their writing. Their stories and images were sent off to be made into a book. We are very proud published authors. Go Atoms! #SASCCSAtoms
On Monday, May 7th, 2018, the Kindergarten classes at #SASCCS went on an exciting trip to the Chittenango Wild Animal Park. Students had fun learning about the different animals and feeding the giraffes. Go Atoms!
Through a grant given by Donate to Give, the first graders at #SASCCS have been working very hard making comfortable blankets and toys to donate to the dogs at Helping Hounds Dog Rescue. Helping Hounds provides a compassionate approach to dog rescue by matching homeless dogs from overcrowded shelter systems with loving homes. Students at #SASCCS been learning about community service and using what we've learned to help out the dogs that are waiting to be adopted. #SASCAtoms
On Wednesday, April 18th, 2018, the Kindergarten classes at #SASCCS were visited by the SPCA of Syracuse. Students learned how to take care of animals. They loved interacting with the therapy dog and guinea pig. Classes made a donation of pet food and kitty litter to say thank you for all the hard work the SPCA does to help the animals in our community.
On April 17th and 18th, 2018 First and second-grade students from #SASCCS journeyed into the tidal flats at the Sciencenter in Ithaca, New York to learn about the natural world. Students interacted with animals in their natural environment before heading out into their own - the playground!
On Tuesday, December 19th, 2017, the first-grade class went to Ultimate Goal. We played kickball, dodgeball, and soccer. We learned how to do rope swings and use the parachute and ended the day with a huge tug of war. On Monday, December 18th, the kindergarten joined in on the fun at Ultimate Goal in Marcellus. The classes learned the importance of teamwork while having fun playing soccer and other games.
On Monday, April 9th, 2018, families kicked off spring at the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Charter School for a Literacy Game Night. Students and parents read stories together and played reading comprehension games. Families brought the games home to promote learning outside the classroom.
On Wednesday, November 29th, 2017, former Syracuse University (SU) basketball player and current Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) coach Tyrone Albright was greeted by eager students at SASCCS. When asked if he ever played any sports besides basketball, Albright mentioned that he played lacrosse when he was young, but preferred the warmth of indoor basketball. The former reserve guard for the Orange Men talked about his college years as a basketball player, which started when he attended Onondaga Community College. After transferring to SU, he joined the nationally recognized college team in his senior year and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Informational Technology. He explained what cyber security is in relation to the current work he does, then headed to cafeteria to enjoy lunch with the children.
