Holiday Donation Drive a Success

This December students and staff at #SASCC collected non-perishable food and new toys to be donated to families in the community in need. We received 64 food items and 37 toy donations. We hope that our contribution to the community will make a difference this holiday season. Teaching our #SASCAtoms the value of altruism is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Cooking with Chartwells - KB

On Friday, December 14, 2018, Kindergarten students from Mr. Thayer and Ms. Kline's class enjoyed a cooking lesson from Chartwells, the food-service provider of our daily school breakfast and lunch. Each student made his or her own personal pizza, including choosing favorite toppings. The best part of the activity? Eating their very own pizzas for lunch!

First Graders Learn the Swing of Glow Golf

On Friday, December 14, 2018,  #SASCCS first-graders took a field trip to Glow Golf at Destiny USA, where they learned how to play miniature golf, with a twist. When they applied their new skills to each of the iridescent 30 holes, they cheered on classmates and showed great sportsmanship. It was a fantastic glow-in-the-dark day!

Staff Ugly Sweater Day

On Friday, December 14, 2018, the SASCCS Staff participated in Ugly Sweater Day. It was a great team building activity and we especially enjoyed seeing the looks on the students' faces!

Unwrapping More than Books at Cazenovia Library

On Wednesday, December 12, 2018, #SASCCS third graders took a field trip to the Cazenovia Public Library to learn about a mummy named Hen housed in the library’s museum. As the students observed Hen, they discussed what his life might have been like when he was alive 3000 years ago. Students were very enthusiastic and interested in viewing all the artifacts on display from Ancient Egypt, and even some from other places around the world. To express their gratitude for the rewarding experience, they drew pictures of the exhibit and wrote thank-you cards to be mailed to the library staff.

First Graders Help Animals in Highland Forest

On Tuesday, November 20, 2018, Citizenship Academy's first-grade classes took a trip to Highland Forest for a community service project. The weather was chilly and snowy, but it didn't stop students from making bird feeders out of ice-cream cones, peanut butter, and birdseed. When completed, the students took the bird feeders on a nature walk in the woods where they put them for all the animals to enjoy during the oncoming winter. Lending a helping hand to forest animals warmed their hearts and left an impression of the value of their good works.

Atoms Light Up Literacy Night and Book Fair

On Thursday, November 29, 2018, #SASCCS hosted its 2nd book fair and literacy night. The well-attended event was filled with hands-on activities to celebrate holidays around the world and, of course, books of all kinds to browse, shop, read and share. The academic fundraiser was a huge success--we received more than $900 in Scholastic dollars that will be used to bring more hands-on materials into our children's classrooms. Thank you, Atoms, for your generous support!

On Friday, November 30, 2018, the third graders at #SASCCS attended a field trip to the Johnson Art Museum at Cornell University. While there, the students learned an authentic African dance, created animal clay figures, and explored the gallery of masks and artifacts. After learning about various African cultures students spent time comparing them to the similarities and differences in their own lives.

Second Grade Gets a Lesson in Engineering

On Monday, November 19, 2018, #SASCCS second graders took a field trip to the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University. Scholars learned about the roof, air flow and how the building workers swap the facility over from a football to basketball event. After the educational tour, our #SASAtoms loved exiting through the big doors the Monster Trucks enter through. Inspiring our students with real-life demonstrations of powerful feats of engineering is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Cooking with Chartwells

On Friday, November 16, 2018, #SASCCS Kindergartners made their own Pizza's. Chartwells, nutrition providers for #SASCCS, discussed healthy choices and provided personal pizzas with any topping our students could want.
