Monday, February 10, 2020—4th Grade Atoms spent an afternoon at the museum, the Everson Museum of Art. Scholars enjoyed a day visually rich in art and reflection as they explored how a story can be told through the Arts. Docents from the Everson Museum of Art led students in a Visual Thinking Strategy tour. They encouraged our Atoms to think deeply about what they saw. After the tour students went back out with their scavenger hunt booklets so they could spend time reflecting on the works of art they saw and interpret each piece uniquely. Students were amazed by all the different works of art housed a the Everson Museum; from drawing and painting to sculpture and 3D paper works! They also got to see original works by pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Red Grooms, a realistic oil painting of Edward Hicks in The Peaceable Kingdom, contemporary mixed-media sculpture by Vanessa German who deals with issues of institutionalized racism... as well as hundreds of three-dimensional ceramic works housed in their permanent collection. All in all 4th graders gained a real understanding of how deeply meaningful stories can be told through works of art! 

Thursday, February 6, 2020—Next stop on the #28Speakersin28Days, ahem 29 days, Tour this year -- United States U.S. Army Sergeant (and SANY parent) Aaron Lamontagne met with #SASCCS Kindergartners.Mr. Lamontagne spoke with students about his training with the military and his duties. Thank you, Mr. Lamontagne, for giving our students another amazing experience in celebration of Black History Month.

Friday, January 31, 2020—Citizenship Academy Third-graders lived out the grand tale of Chicken Little on their recent field trip to the Onondaga Free Library. Public libraries are an important cornerstone to a healthy community, and we want to make sure our Atoms understand all the wonderful educational opportunities libraries offer. During their field trip, our scholars went on a tour of the building, reenacted a play, and challenged their critical thinking with the STEAM bins.

Monday, February 3, 2020—Atoms jumped right into #BlackHistoryMonth with a visit from members of the Syracuse Police Department for the #28Speakersin28Days speaking tour. Officer Brandon Hanks, Officer Marlena Jackson, Officer Shaquille Muhammed, CSO Officer Nilieka Brown, and Information Aide Lenwand Terry-Brantley engaged with students in Kindergarten through fourth-grade. Officers participated in a group yoga class, read to students, shared insight from what their job is like and the importance of community involvement. We are so thankful for these wonderful role models made the time for our #SASCCS Community. 

Friday. December 20, 2020—Congratulations to our star students of the second quarter. For the 2nd Quarter, our students focused on the character strengths of Bravery, Knowing my words & actions affect others, Gratitude, Kindness, Humility, Self-Control, Optimism, Prudence, and Perseverance. Words are not enough to explain how hard these students worked in and out of the classroom from rigorous academics to making meaningful relationships.

Friday, December 20, 2020—We are so thankful for our WONDERFUL students at #SASCCS. This album highlights just a few of our honored Atoms from the first quarter. The character strengths focused on during the first quarter were: Curiosity, Teamwork, Open-Mindedness, Being present and giving others attention, Integrity, Perspective, and Creativity. These Students did an amazing job of displaying these character traits in and out of the classroom while simultaneously being exceptional scholars.

Thursday, December 5, 2020 & Tuesday, January 21, 2020—That's a wrap! Over two separate trips this winter, Third-Grade Atoms ventured to the Cazenovia Public Library & Museum to bring their studies to life. Students met a real mummy, named Hen. With great questions and engagement, the students were able to expand their knowledge of Ancient Egypt. Way to go, Atoms! 

Thursday, January 16, 2020 & Friday, January 17, 2020—First and Second-grade Atoms kicked their kinesthetic brain into gear by visiting a school favorite, The Museum of Science and Technology, in downtown Syracuse. Atoms explored exhibits focused on the human body, our magnificent brains, dinosaurs, earth science, different kinds of energy, and toothpick world! It was exciting to experience so much hands-on learning throughout the day! 

Tuesday, November 26, 2020—The first graders of 1C visited Hospital Land at Crouse Hospital! With the help of Nurse Jackie, we learned all about going to the hospital, X-Rays, and the fun food choices you have if you stay overnight. We even got to test out a few of the doctors' tools like the stethoscope, doctors' scrubs, and hospital beds. IC had just finished learning about the human body so it was great to review healthy habits at Hospital Land!

Monday, January 13, 2020—You may remember that one of our #SASCAtoms took it upon himself to raise funds for the homeless during the holidays. Well, guess what, he did in a big sort of way. Giancarlo was able to raise $770. He created bags full of items that would be useful to individuals without stable housing. He created 72 bags filled with the following items

-Hat
-Pair of Gloves
-Pair of Socks
-Emergency Blanket
-Pair of Handwarmers
-Washcloth
-3 Bars of Travel Soap
-2 Travel tubes of toothpaste
-Bar of deodorant
-Chapstick
-Roll of toilet paper
-3 Travel bottles of shampoo/conditioner
-Nutrigrain bar

All of his bags were packed into drawstring backpacks that also have a reflector for added safety at night. The bags will be donated to Road to Emmaus Ministry of Syracuse. Let us never forget, one voice, one child, can change the world.
